Silenced? Martínez's Apology Smells Like a Club in Damage Control, and INEOS Has Questions to Answer

Players do not walk back the most honest interview of their season by accident. The club got to him.

One day. That is how long Lisandro Martínez's honesty lasted.

On Tuesday he told Amazon that Michael Carrick was not backed properly and that he expected more investment in the summer. He also said he expected more from the club's technical director. By Wednesday, an Instagram apology had appeared.

The reading is simple. Players do not walk back the most honest interview of their season by accident. The club got to him, then, a fine of a couple of weeks' wages followed, along with an instruction to post something soothing. The club has not confirmed this, and we are not presenting it as fact. But a hard fine and a convenient apology is the oldest play in the football book, and a conveniently timed apology does nothing to rebut it.

He Was Not Alone

Martínez was not freelancing. Melissa Reddy, Laurie Whitwell and Ben Jacobs have all reported that his view that Carrick has been sold short, and that the squad lacks the depth to fight on several fronts, is shared by several senior players and by staffs at the club.

Reddy also reports that it was discussed in the dressing room, that the club knew about the frustration over recruitment, and that left-back and striker cover were major concerns before the season began. Her report says the players are sick of "reset after reset" with no questions asked of the people in charge.

So Martínez was the one brave enough to say it out loud. The club's reaction was to make him take it back.

The Ronaldo Echo

Rewind to November 2022. Cristiano Ronaldo, in his Piers Morgan interview, said it would be hard for United to be at the top of the game in the next two or three years. He said "the fans deserve the truth" and that things inside the club did not help United reach the top level. In the same interview he also said the owners did not care.

He was talking about the Glazers, and he was mocked, sidelined and shown the door.

INEOS arrived in 2024 as the answer to all that. Sir Jim Ratcliffe took a minority stake, took control of football operations, and brought in his own people. Jason Wilcox became technical director, Omar Berrada became CEO, and Dave Brailsford and Jean-Claude Blanc joined the board.

Nearly three years after Ronaldo spoke, a World Cup winner in the dressing room is making the same complaint. Different owners, the same story.

The Questions INEOS Must Answer

• Who is accountable? Managers keep getting sacked. What happened to the recruitment decisions that left Carrick short at left-back and up front? • Where is the plan? Martínez asked, "What about other areas?" Neither the club nor INEOS has answered. • Why is a player punished for the truth? If a fine and an apology really happened, the club chose to protect its image over fixing its squad. • What did the summer do? Players say they were promised reinforcements and warned about them in pre-season. If those warnings were ignored, whose decision was that?

But the Players Cannot Hide Either

The same dressing room that wants the owners held to account has to take its share. A thin squad explains a lot, but it does not excuse a "really poor" performance that Martínez himself admitted to. Eleven men on a pitch cannot hide behind a board.

The Verdict

If the club thinks an Instagram apology ends this, it has misread the moment. A senior player spoke, his teammates reportedly agree, and Ronaldo's old warning is ringing in everyone's ears.

Ratcliffe and INEOS sold United a revolution. They now have to explain why the dressing room sounds so familiar.
