Harry Kane Chases Cristiano Ronaldo’s Champions League Record After Bayern’s Norwegian Stumble

By Dike Victor

FC Bayern Munich travelled to Norway expecting a routine European victory on Tuesday night. Instead, a remarkable 3–3 draw against Viking FK left the German giants with more questions than answers after a chaotic encounter in Stavanger.

Yet, amid Bayern’s defensive struggles, one player continued to deliver at the highest level: Harry Kane.

The England captain scored twice in the second half to extend his UEFA Champions League scoring streak to nine consecutive matches, leaving him just two games short of Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of scoring in 11 successive appearances in the competition during his time at Real Madrid.

Kane’s double did more than rescue Bayern from an embarrassing defeat. It further strengthened his remarkable record in European football and reignited the debate surrounding his Ballon d’Or credentials.

With 36 Champions League goals scored since turning 30, Kane has also moved ahead of Lionel Messi in this statistical category, underlining his extraordinary productivity in the latter stages of his career.

Rescuing Bayern in a Norwegian Thriller

For much of Tuesday night, Bayern Munich looked nothing like the dominant European side many expected to see.

Viking FK defied expectations by racing into a 2–0 first-half lead through clinical finishes from Gianni Stensness and Peter Christiansen, exposing Bayern’s defensive vulnerabilities and putting Vincent Kompany’s side under considerable pressure.

Bayern needed a response, and Kane once again proved decisive.

In the 54th minute, after Konrad Laimer won a penalty, Kane stepped up and converted with composure to give the visitors a lifeline. Six minutes later, Joshua Kimmich delivered a precise cross following a recycled corner, allowing the striker to finish clinically and bring Bayern level at 2–2.

Luis Díaz subsequently put Bayern ahead, seemingly completing the comeback. However, Herman Haugen’s 90th-minute equaliser denied the German side victory and ensured the contest ended 3–3.

The result exposed Bayern’s defensive shortcomings, but Kane’s individual performance offered a reminder of the quality that continues to make him one of Europe’s most dangerous forwards.

Reflecting on the match, Kane acknowledged that Bayern had made life unnecessarily difficult for themselves while expressing pride in his personal achievement.

“On a personal level, scoring in nine straight Champions League games is something I’m very proud of. When you are chasing records set by legends like Cristiano, it shows you are doing something right, but the main objective will always be winning trophies with this club,” Kane said.

His comments captured the balance between individual ambition and collective responsibility. Records matter, but for a striker of Kane’s calibre, silverware remains the ultimate objective.

The Nine-Game Streak: Kane’s Relentless Pursuit of History

Kane’s Champions League scoring run has become one of the defining individual storylines of Bayern’s European campaign.

Across his nine consecutive scoring appearances, he has reportedly accumulated 11 goals, demonstrating an exceptional ability to deliver consistently on the biggest stage.

His threat comes from multiple sources. Whether converting penalties, attacking crosses with his head or finishing from outside the penalty area, Kane possesses the variety required to trouble even the most disciplined defences.

That versatility makes him particularly difficult to contain. Defenders cannot simply deny him space inside the penalty area without leaving opportunities elsewhere.

Kane has now matched Robert Lewandowski’s personal best of scoring in nine consecutive Champions League appearances. Cristiano Ronaldo, however, remains the benchmark, having scored in 11 successive matches in the competition.

The prospect of Kane matching or surpassing that record adds another compelling storyline to Bayern’s upcoming European fixtures.

Two more consecutive scoring appearances would see him equal Ronaldo’s achievement. One beyond that would put him outright at the summit.

For a player who has spent years establishing himself among the world’s elite strikers, the opportunity to surpass one of football’s most celebrated goalscorers represents another significant milestone.

The Ballon d’Or Question: Has Kane Done Enough?

Kane’s individual achievements have inevitably brought the Ballon d’Or conversation into sharper focus.

With the awards ceremony in Paris approaching on 26 October, the debate centres on whether his extraordinary consistency and scoring output should place him ahead of the competition’s other leading candidates.

Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé remains a formidable contender, while Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal continues to attract attention for his creativity, technical brilliance and match-winning influence.

Each presents a different case.

Mbappé’s argument rests on his goalscoring dominance and ability to produce decisive moments in major matches. Yamal offers a combination of individual flair, creative influence and performances capable of changing the course of a game.

Kane’s strongest argument, meanwhile, is built on consistency, goals and sustained influence across competitions. His Champions League scoring streak strengthens that case, particularly if Bayern’s European campaign continues to deliver significant results.

The debate is not simply about who possesses the greatest individual talent. It is also about which player has had the most decisive season and how much weight voters place on goals, trophies, creativity and performances in defining moments.

Former Germany international Christoph Kramer has previously expressed a strong preference for Kane, highlighting the striker’s overall value to his team.

“I think if all the coaches in the world voted, Harry Kane would win,” Kramer said. “As a coach, Harry Kane is the player you’d most want in your team. In my view, he is worth more to Bayern than any other player is to their team.”

Kramer’s argument speaks to a quality that can sometimes be overlooked when individual awards are discussed: Kane’s contribution extends beyond scoring goals. His ability to link play, create opportunities for teammates and provide a focal point in attack makes him an invaluable component of Bayern’s system.

Kramer also suggested that media voting can favour players whose performances generate greater attention through flair and narrative, potentially benefiting players such as Yamal and Mbappé.

That raises a legitimate question about how Kane’s consistency will be weighed against the more spectacular moments associated with his rivals.

Nevertheless, goalscoring records alone cannot settle the Ballon d’Or debate. Team success, the overall quality of a player’s season and performances in decisive matches will also shape the final verdict.

The Final Verdict: Can Kane Rewrite Champions League History?

Bayern Munich’s defensive performance in Stavanger should concern Kompany. Conceding three goals against Viking FK, including a late equaliser after taking the lead, exposed weaknesses that stronger European opponents could punish more severely.

Kane’s brilliance, however, remains a major positive.

His ability to produce two goals when Bayern needed inspiration underlines his importance to the team. More importantly, his continuing run of Champions League goals places him within touching distance of one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s most remarkable records.

Surpassing Ronaldo’s 11-game streak would not automatically guarantee Kane the Ballon d’Or, but it would strengthen his individual case and provide another historic achievement to consider alongside his broader performances.

Ultimately, Kane must balance personal milestones with Bayern’s pursuit of major trophies. His own assessment after the draw made that priority clear.

For now, the England captain continues to demonstrate why consistency remains one of the most valuable qualities in elite football. While others compete for attention through spectacular moments, Kane continues to build his case through goals, records and an unwavering influence on his team.

The question is no longer whether Kane belongs among Europe’s elite goalscorers. It is whether he can go one step further and surpass Cristiano Ronaldo’s extraordinary Champions League record.

With two more consecutive scoring appearances enough to equal Ronaldo’s 11-game run, Bayern’s next European fixtures could prove decisive.
